Winery tours with Les Grands Chais de France; Part 1

Les Grands Chais de France (GCF), a major French wine operation with its head office in Strasbourg, is something like an iceberg: there is a lot more underneath the surface than can be seen with a quick glance.  This is the first in a series of posts about my visit to some of their [...]

Trip report on Prince Edward County

Summer has finally returned to Southern Ontario after taking the last two years off.  So far, we have enjoyed plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures, and only enough rain to grow things.  Inspired to explore my own backyard without getting on a plane, and having heard so many good reviews, I drove to Prince Edward County [...]

Halifax Trip Report

With a ton of vacation time left, and the time to use it running out, I looked around for places to go.  London?  Chicago?  Las Vegas?  It occurred to me that while I had been to all of these places more than once, I had never been to Halifax, Nova Scotia, which is in my [...]

‘Cap’-ping Off Wine Enjoyment

There was a time when screw cap closures signalled that the contents of a wine bottle were of questionable quality, but that is no longer the case.  With modern advances in the technology, and in the wine consumer’s attitude, a screw cap means, among other positive things, getting a bottle open more quickly.  What could [...]

Rocca della Macie tasting dinner

Oh, the dill pickles.  At the Rocca della Macie tasting dinner hosted by Noble Estates at Barberian’s Steak House on April 26th, I got to indulge in one of Toronto’s great pleasures: the made-in-house dill pickles.  Crunchy and tangy, these things are awesome.  Luckily, there was equally awesome wine to go along with our meal [...]

A very Good Friday

With sunny weather in the forecast, it was only natural that I’d want to be outside as much as possible.  After a nice holiday Friday lie-in, I headed out with a friend for some rollerblading along the lake.  Said friend, clearly thinking ahead, had shown up at my door fully provisioned for an impromptu BBQ.  [...]

Fontanafredda Barolo vertical tasting

The ever-charming Phil Mirabelli of Noble Estates, and his equally charming wife Debbie, were the hosts of a Fontanafredda Barolo vertical tasting at the National Club in Toronto on Monday March 22, 2010.  I was fortunate enough to be invited, and got to hear winemaker Danilo Drocco discuss his approach towards everything from vineyard [...]

Of sun, surf, and sunburn

For my recent birthday, I chose to go to surf camp in Costa Rica.  I have always wanted to learn to surf, and I figured a birthday was a worthy excuse to finally do it.  After trolling the Internet for a bit, I came across Costa Rica Surf Adventures (www.CRSurfAdventures.com), which operates in Tamarindo, on [...]

Good restaurant news

Those of you who follow The Naked Wine Show on Twitter may remember that a couple of weeks ago I posted another mash note to Lucien, the restaurant on Wellington St. that I have already raved about in this space.  Here comes another rave.

A companion and I were there during Winterlicious, and we were impressed [...]

Barrel sampling at Peninsula Ridge

On Jan. 30, 2010 I was invited by Norm Beal, head of Peninsula Ridge, to visit the property and sample some wines from barrel, as well as from bottle.  Norm is a very generous man, as you will see from the quantity of notes, and his winery produces some terrific juice.
